What is Kigelia Africana?
Kigelia Africana is a flowering tree found in sub-Saharan Africa that produces velvety maroon flowers and grey sausage-shaped fruit – the source behind the tree’s nickname “The Sausage Tree”. The pulp within the skin is firm and fibrous and contains small seeds. These seeds are energy rich and contain high amounts of phosphorous, proteins and lipids. The oil of the seeds is rich in oleic acid and essential fatty acids. In many African countries, the fruit has many medicinal purposes and is commonly used to treat significant skin conditions. African healers have been known to use the kigelia fruit to treat fungal infections, boils, acne, psoriasis and skin cancer. Notably, African women have been known to use cosmetic preparations of kigelia ointments to ensure blemish-free complexions, to act as a skin firming remedy and to soothe dry skin. The kigelia fruit has been shown to possess anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory, and skin soothing properties that are all beneficial in promoting healthier looking skin. As we age, our skin loses elasticity and becomes damaged by an increasing number of free radicals that are formed in the natural aging process. The kigelia plant extract works as an anti-oxidant against these free radicals to keep the skin healthy and strong. The active ingredients in the Kigelia plant fruit steroidal saponins and the flavonoids, luteolin and quercetin. These phytochemicals help strengthen and stabilize the collagen fibers that support the skin, thus having a firming effect.
In the Bellezza Si Plumping Cream, the firming effects of Kigelia Africana work with the moisturizing qualities of argan oil to result in firmer looking and hydrated skin with a radiant finish.
